for their first 2 albums these guys recorded in a very limited 4 track studio. They used home made electronics. There was an article on the whole history in Sound On Sound Magazine :)

It really doesn't help your development to think about playing in that way. If you have a problem with pitch you won't overcome the problem by simply sliding up or down to get in tune. I spent many years playing by ear and sheer luck rather than spending time going through exercises ...

I think you would get a clear sound if you add blankets and heavy materials on the walls to absorb the sound.
When you play now I can hear the sound echo around the room.
It will make it easier for you to hear exactly how you sound :)
