About Stella Adler Los Angeles, A Conservatory for Actors

The Stella Adler- Los Angeles "A Conservatory for Actors", is a world renowned acting school located in the heart of Hollywood, California. The Adler-LA offers extensive training for the serious actor in theatre, film, and television (on camera). The Stella Adler Technique grew out of Miss Adler's personal work with Constantine Stanislavsky, the father of modern acting. This technique (or method of acting) has been studied by many of the worlds most notable actors, directors, and writers including Marlon Brando, Robert DeNiro, Salma Hayek, Benico Del Toro, Holland Taylor, Gary Ross, Eric Stoltz, Mark Ruffalo, just to name a few.

The Stella Adler Theatres and Academy are named in honor of one of the world's foremost acting teachers. After a long and successful career in films and on Broadway, including ten years with the famous "Group Theatre," Stella Adler opened her New York school in 1949. She taught an acting technique that is based on her personal work with Konstantine Stanislavski, a technique that nurtures the imagination of the actor.
Stella's teachings have been embraced by many of the world's most respected actors, writers and directors.

After Stella taught for many years at various locations here in Southern California, the West Coast theatre and school opened in Los Angeles in 1985, at the corner of Hollywood Blvd. and Argyle. After a tragic fire followed by the sale and purchase of the existing property by the MTA for the Hollywood subway system, the Adler was forced to relocate. In 1993, we moved to our present location at 6773 Hollywood Boulevard, second floor.

The Stella Adler Academy of Acting is an 18,000 square foot 'state of the art' facility located in the heart of the historic theatre district on Hollywood Boulevard, which in the 1930's housed the famous Embassy club. The historic Speak Easy, used by famous pesonalities during the era of prohibition, has been refurbished and is apart of the Leonora & Joseph Schildkraut East Gallery, which houses exhibits on the past, present and future of our arts. The Adler also houses the non-profit Stella Adler Theatre, which is involved in many community outreach programs including children's youth programs, free senior programs and a reading series for new and established playwrights. The facility also includes the Studio Theatre, Irene Gilbert Theatre, dance studio, music studio, library, scene shop, classrooms, dressing rooms, administrative offices, and a video and equipment room, all dedicated to teaching Stella's technique to new generations of actors.
