I'm going to explain this, as respectful as I can.

Truth be told, Firearms are a hobby for most of us. They're not tools, because we're not soldiers. They're collectible, fun (yet expensive), to own and shoot. When he said "it will serve you well", its more of reference to a reliable firearm, that's there when you need it, and will not malfunction (at the target range 99.9% of the time), and for that oh so small gap for self defense (virtually never).
Alot of simple-minded people buy such a rifle (30 round mag, semi automatic fire), with the intention in mind that they will have to use it for the latter reason mentioned. Its a dream, fantasy, call it what you will, as it will never happen. Even in a shit hit the fan situation (society's collapse), its not like a firearm would help you much. But back to the main point, less we get sidetracked, people usually buy these just for the range.
