Deliberately 'DUMBED DOWN' education made it easy for Bush/ OBAMA to slip the 10 STEPS to FASCISM past many of us-
because-
IF we're not taught our CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS given by the Founders to PROTECT OUR LIBERTY & our OPEN SOCIETY.
-we're less likely to notice that OUR RIGHTS are NOW being systematically dismantled to CLOSE our society.
-If we're not taught European history,
we won't hear ALARM BELLS when a Department of "HOMELAND" Security is set up -that HITLER used the term "HOMELAND" too.

GLOBAL history of FASCISM tells us the URGENT SERIOUSNESS of the 10 STEPS to FASCISM we see unfolding in the USA;-

1). CREATE a TERRIFYING THREAT;-

Hitler set fire to The Reichstag in February 1933 to scare the people that NATIONAL SECURITY was under attack from "COMMUNIST ARSON"
& swiftly afterwards the Enabling Act was passed in Nazi Germany, replacing Constitutional Law with an open-ended state of emergency!
9/11 scared USA into national shock
Faster than 6 wks later, on Oct 26 2001, the USA Patriot Act was passed by Congress who said they scarcely had time to read it first!
Govt told us we were now on a "war footing"; in a "global war" against a "global terrorists" intending to "wipe out civilisation".
ALL our other wars had endpoints of freedom;
This "war" has NO END & no national boundaries- the globe itself is the battlefield.
If Americans believe we're threatened with the end of our civilisation - it makes us more willing to accept loss & restrictions on our freedoms.

2)..CREATE a PRISON (GULAG) where TORTURE is OUTSIDE THE RULE OF LAW

Bush stated he wanted Guantánamo Bay to be situated in legal "outer space"
At FIRST, the prisoners are seen as troublemakers, "enemies of the people" or "criminals". & Citizens feel safer & do not identify with the prisoners.
BUT soon, civil society leaders - opposition members, labour activists, clergy & journalists - are arrested & imprisoned as well.
This SAME process took place in fascist shifts or anti-democracy crackdowns in Italy & Germany in 1920s,1930s, the Latin American coups in 1970s & beyond.
It's standard practice for closing down an open society / crushing a pro-democracy uprising.
USA has jails in Iraq, Afghanistan & Guantánamo in Cuba, where detainees are abused & kept indefinitely without trial or access to due process of the law.
Bush stated NO info will be issued on CIA's secret "black site" prisons throughout the world, used to incarcerate people seized off the street.
GULAGS in history tend to grow ever larger, more secretive & deadly.
We KNOW from first hand accounts, photos, videos & govt documents that people, innocent and guilty, are tortured in USA run prisons. Mussolini & Stalin did same.
Many Americans still assume detainee abuse involves only "scary brown people",
NOT realising that destruction of Rule of Law at Guantánamo is a dangerous precedent for ALL of us..

3) - GIVE POWER TO THUGS

Scare citizens by arming thugs who are free from prosecution.
'Security' guard opened fire on unarmed people in Hurricane Katrina. Back in 2000, Florida Poll workers counting votes were menaced by uniformed men.
The Blackshirts roamed the Italian countryside beating up communists; Brownshirts staged violent rallies throughout Germany.
USA spends $100's MILLIONS $ on private security thugs & TSA goons.

4). SET UP INTERNAL SURVEILLANCE.

In Mussolini's Italy, Nazi Germany, communist East Germany, communist China & ALL closed societies- secret police spy on ordinary people & encourage neighbours to spy on neighbours.
The Stasi needed to keep only a minority of East Germans under surveillance to convince the majority they too were being watched.
In 2005 & 2006, when James Risen & Eric Lichtblau wrote in New York Times of a secret state programme to wiretap citizens' phones, read their emails & follow international financial transactions, ordinary Americans realised they too could be under scrutiny.
Closed societies always claim SPYING is for "national security"; its real function is to keep citizens docile & inhibit activism & dissent.

5). HARASS & INFILTRATE CITIZEN GROUPS

A church in Pasadena, which preached that Jesus was in favour of peace, was investigated by the Internal Revenue Service, while churches that got Republicans out to vote, (illegal under US tax law), were left alone.
