A Legendary band, The Scruffs, originally hailed from Memphis, Tennessee and became Southern pioneers of the power pop musical movement.
Founded by lead songwriter, singer and guitarist Stephen Burns, The Scruffs recorded the classic cult album Wanna Meet The Scruffs? at Ardent Studios in Memphis, in 1977.
Critical acclaim struck the band, much the same as fellow Memphians, Big Star, and a second album was recorded entitled Teenage Gurls. (This album would remain unreleased for 20 years.)
On the promise of fame and fortune, the original Scruffs resettled in Manhattan, New York City for 3 years. During that time, Stephen Burns kept the band gigging and recording. In 1980-81, a single, When Donna Romances was a pick hit in Record World. Despite great performances at CBGBs, Maxs Kansas City, Trax, Hurrahs and other top venues, The Scruffs remained unsigned to a major record label.
In late 1982, Stephen Burns returned to Memphis, the original Scruffs all but psychologically destroyed from the flames of fame and failure. Perhaps the original prediction of the hit song Im A Failure (from Wanna Meet The Scruffs?) was a song of self fulfilling prophecy.

While Pere Ubu and other Ohio cousins were offering only cerebral dissonance, the 1977 punk explosion visited Cleveland in the form of the Pagans. Picking up where the departed (for NYC) Dead Boys left off, the Pagans were younger, louder and, if not as snotty, better in other ways. Led by raspy-voiced Mike Hudson, this slam-dunk garage quartet produced a small stack of classic singles: "Not Now No Way," "Street Where Nobody Lives" and "What's This Sh*t Called Love" (later covered by the Meatmen) are all down and dirty, glorious three-chord excursions into the filth and the fury.
The Pagans broke up in late '79 without ever issuing an album. The band's first longplayer (informally known as The Pink Album was in large part the result of a 1983 reunion gig (only Hudson and guitarist Tommy Gunn are holdovers from the old days), pressed as a limited-edition (500 copies) live LP. The sound quality of The Pagans isn't horrible and the rawness is true to the band's essential spirit, but the performances of the group's best tunes are sorely deficient.

"...when I came from the VD clinic , I thought our love was finished ..."
"QUE PASA - ME NO POP I" Composed & Performed by Coati Mundi
"Xtreme" performance video of the classic Splangish rap song.
Coati Mundi aka Andy Hernandez formerly of Kid Creole and The Coconuts and also Dr.Buzzard's Original Savannah Band risks his life on a improvised comic romp through Washington Square Park. Unsuspecting park goers are pounced upon and forced to become unpaid extras.
This no fear freestyle fun fest frolic flip flop forage was fortunately inspired by a lack of an informal education and an obsessive need for misplaced alienation.
Guerrilla style music video directed by Ed Steinberg of ROCKAMERICA.
Filmed on a lovely NYC Sunday afternoon in 1981. ------------------------------------ AMAZING TRIVIA SIDEBAR: - There were 7 to 9 complete performances done that day. There were very little edits made. You forensics freaks however will be able to figure out where the cuts were manifested by the size , dimension and kinetic angle of the various shadows cast by the people , poles and the surrounding foliage.
- This video was previously posted as two clips. Even though it meant a drop in quality we however combined both clips and re-posted it as a single clip on the behest of celebrated Film Director & Mundi fan Olivier Stone. When Coati auditioned for a film role that eventually went to Tom Cruise he paraphrased the lyrics singing: "ME NO POPEYE - YOU NO OLIVE STONE".
- One of the kids playing in the children's playground section turned out to be Leonardo DiCaprio. Could you tell which one it is?
- We had a 20 year anniversary of the filming event. It turns out unfortunately that 85% of the people under 21 years old that day are presently incarcerated in a maximum secured facility. Please pray for them.
DISCLAIMER: Do not try this type of performance on your own without consulting a professional and in the company of a militia.
