I'm reading the NY Times. The cover and several pages in section A are covered with articles relating to the weekend media odyssey of Rev. Wright. One page excerpts Obama's March 18 speech on Wright side-by-side with his comments to the press yesterday. His Tuesday comments are forceful, unequivocal, and reflect a considerable shift in tone from the comments he made in March's "National Conversation" speech. This morning I watched an 11 minute tape of a Fox newsman trying to get the best of, and losing badly to, an eloquent (white) pastor. That religious man took the reporter, and the media at large, to task for willfully distorting facts with sound bites, and for helping to manipulate the national zeitgeist for the benefit of those in power. I became emotional listening to him, in part, simply because he's white. Sadly, actually seeing and listening to an authentic white ally is a rare event for most colored folks. We cherish it, don't want it to end, like a delicious bit of chocolate. After I watched that video, I became aware that something was making me sad, deep within. But I couldn't name it.
I dutifully finish comparing the speeches. That must be my task since the Times placed them together. Only then do I glance at the large photo above the article. It shows Barack Obama leaving the stage after his Tuesday press conference. The photographer has caught him in midstride as he leaves the stage. Although he is still, as we say, "...wearing that suit", there is a slight but noticeable slump to his shoulders, a lowering of his head, and a tightening of his mouth makes him appear to be holding something in. He appears to be reading notes he holds in his hands. But he's already given the speech. Why read the notes now?
Then it hits me. I'm looking at a man who's just lost the only father he's ever known.

Two nights ago, I watched David Gergen utter the two words that are on the minds of all potential voters, whether they care to admit it or not: "He's black." This, in response to AC's question about Obama's promising lead in the polls following the second debate.
Gergen was blunt, as well he should be; he went on to say that there was really no way to know how comfortable voters are with that fact, since substantive, useful conversations about race remain elusive. We're heading for a real crap shoot in November.
