Ella Fitzgerald - Dream a Little Dream of Me
Ella Fitzgerald - Dream a Little Dream of Me. July 16, 1963. With Count Basie.
As a huge Ella fan, I love to hear a recording I've never hear before. Of course, with her recording history, that's gonna keep happening for a long time. There's a reason why she was the "first lady of song" and not simply the "first lady of jazz". What a consumate musician!
As for Amy Winehouse...

cont'd
But if you listen to her early recording of the 4 Last songs and compare it to her later one, you can hear the difference. There is a purity and simplicity in the older that's not there w/ the newer. It's really sad. Someone (Rudolf Bing, perhaps) likened her voice to Tebaldi early on. B...

Ah Renee! She started out with a great instrument. Really, she did. So much potential. She still has her good moments (mostly in Mozart and Strauss), but she has misused her voice and now has so much affectation (physically and emotionally) when she sings, that it just distracts.

I agree that this is a strange, almost campy, rendition of a song. Then again, the lyrics become almost camp or at least cliche, in the 21st century. I can see where she has the chops to sing the role. also, I can only imagine what Bartlett Sher and the others casting the show must have gone thro...

Losing My Mind
Bernadette Peters, "Losing My Mind," Kennedy Center "Follies"
All that said (see below. I think)she does portray a total breakdown center stage. At times it is as if she is being driven/animated by the music, much like the Antonia in Tales of Hoffman (sorry if you don't get the ref). I am attaching the Collins version not because it is THE version, but to ...

I have 19 recordings of the songs (and counting). Though each has its highlights, I believe the late, wonderful, beautiful Lucia and the amazing Jessye Norman are probably my two favorites! Exquisite. Wonderful to see her performing live. Wat a loss. But thank God we were blessed with her for...

Evidently there are some cuts on this album that are from the Back to Black era (and a little earlier). But this is still great, even though it's not her best. What a talent. What a loss.
