The 2nd amendment: "A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State...
...the right of the People to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed".
Some like to say that this amendment only applies to our modern idea of "militia"; that being a standing army, and that it doesn't apply to the the individual. However, in those days a standing army was not synonomous with a militia. An army was composed largely of mercenaries, criminals, captives who, for a payment had switched loyalties, as well as aliens. "Men without land, homes, families or priciples" (The Bill of Rights Primer: By Amar & Adams). A ragtag bunch, they were not looked upon with favor by the colonists. Conversely, The "militia" comprised the local townsfolk; the merchants, farmers, tradesmen and such...the "People".
Also, the 2nd amendment was not written for "hunting". I'm tired of the "you don't need that thing to hunt with" argument. If semi's are banned under that mentality, then they'll go after your bolt action next. After all, that's what the Marines use as thier "sniper" rifle...a bolt action .308 with a scope. (I know, they use heavier stuff as well). Anyway, you won't be able to justify any modern firearm eventually. Many big game animals are brought down with muzzleloaders and archery tackle...AND THAT'S ALL YOU'LL HAVE FOLKS, so don't fall for that shit! It's not a hunting issue, It's a defense issue.
