Taking on the project of resurrecting a Rochester M2MC 2-Barrel carburetor for a vehicle a friend will be using in a demolition derby in February. The M2MC was brought forth as an economy oriented carburetor intended for smaller displacement engines in the late '70's - actually only a few years! GM kinda cheated on this project by using the front half (primaries) of a Quadrajet carburetor. The primaries on a Quadrajet are very tiny, meaning high air velocity, in conjunction with a metering rod system and triple venturi design assure top fuel efficiency. It comes at the expense the engine, especially the V8 offerings, would be a little restricted in the higher RPM ranges. In all honesty, the public had all but given up on 'performance' during that period. This particular example appears to have suffered from a little water getting into it while it was sitting off of a car a while ago. It will be cleaned before assemble with new gaskets, then adjusted after it is reassembled.

Taking a little time to wash a car, and check things over on it helps to assure you catch little things before they become bigger issues. Give a car a little time, and it will be good back to you many-fold. It 'feels' nicer to drive afterwards too. There are covers on the seats, absorbing papers under the floor mats, this clutter has to be lived with, for there is at least a whole car left after the ravages of winter, these materials help to keep water and dirt in check inside the car. Underneath a few trouble spots are shown that get extra attention from the rust proofing spray, especially the back side of the quarter panel by the fuel filler neck. Due attention despite the car having almost 300,000 kilometers (186,000 miles) on the odometer has kept corrosion at bay, and the paint is original save for a few spots fogged in on a couple of bumper corners. A cold (cool!) start for the cold start fans. The cold rattle and carrying on is gone, I thought it was 'piston slap' that these engines are known for, but it is all but silent now, it looks like the bad idler tensioner was the correctly traced source of the racket.

A high pitched squeal was happening on really cold days at cold startup. It was traced to the idler tensioner assembly and wheel. The spring in the tentioner was not moving freely anymore, and the wheel had much play and was rough spinning. While the surpentine belt was already off, I figured it was time to change the idler wheel as well. It makes it much easier on the water and power steering pump, as well as the air conditioning compressor when a idler tensioner assembly is in good order. It also saves you from being stuck on the side of the road, the springs can fly apart on these assemblies when they are very worn out. Also done is a quick walk-around of the car, catching a bit of the undersides to see how the oiling is helping to keep corrosion at bay.

It is possible to keep an old car running for many years, and with that to keep the body and under structure in decent, safe order as well. To do this, it is required to have the vehicle sprayed with oil. It does not have to be done in a major way every year, eventually the coating is sound enough not to wash away. And expecting this, I was told by the garage where I usually get the job done that the car does not need a complete respray this year, it only needs a few touch ups. Touch ups or not, it is important they get done, for a rust hole only will become larger if allowed to get started period. In this dizzying clip, as the camera had a mind of its own for a change, with the help of an attentive assistant, the fender edges, pipes under the hood and inner rocker panels were addressed. To get to the inner rocker panels, an old hose from an air conditioner duct air freshener kit was used. The tip of it spays the oil in a diffused pattern, so the hole panel gets a coating. As stated, the car looks grungy over the winter with the oil seeping, but there is always a car left in the spring at least. I hope the viewer on their own monitor will be able to see a little more then showed up on my older unit, it was very dull outside. The product used is called Rust Check.

Sorry! Smudged lens! The pitfalls of making these clips when oil is lurking around. Mixed up which clutches were what as well during the explanation! The plates with the radial grooves are the forward clutch units, the same sized smooth set is for the reverse/high clutch. The mind goes one way, the words the other. Raw, uncut! Regardless, I still have yet to have a transmission come out having three speeds reverse, one forward, well actually I did once. a clip some day soon will show the vehicle it was involved with. These parts are ready to go into storage as they are not needed here, but somebody else may need them for their own project. Nothing gets thrown out that somebody else may be able to use to get their own project on the mend. Turbo 400 parts, the forward, reverse/high and second clutches. Speaking out about solving what could be the reason these parts are in the condition they are in. The words spoken can be applied to diagnosing most any transmission from the period of carbureted vehicles.
