This is Lake Mäleren on the outskirts of Stockholm. My former residence, Drottningholm Castle, stands on its lakeside.
The palace and its large garden are known as the Versailles of Scandinavia for its elegance and classic beauty.
At the time I was born my father had little power as King. Political decisions and the control of parliament were in the hands of powerful aristocrats.
This is my father Adolph. He was a puppet-king who did not have any actual authority. Nevertheless he seemed satisfied with his status.
My father made this working room inside the palace and built furniture all day long.
He was a lonely king.
My mother Lovisa-Ulrika, on the other hand, wielded considerable influence at court.
She wanted a powerful king.
This is the Queens bedroom which my mother renovated. The room was lavishly gilded in order to demonstrate the power of the monarch.
My mother was determined to regain the Kings full authority.
In my mothers dressing room hung my childhood portrait.
She taught me how to be a great king and wished that I would become one.
Upon ascending to the throne at the age of 25 I launched a coup with my troops against the aristocrats and regained power.
My mothers long-cherished hope finally came true.
This is my wife, Sofia. After 10 years of marriage we finally had a much-awaited son
I was overwhelmed with joy on his birth but my mother claimed that the baby was of my wife and a guard.
In the Uppsala University Library is left my letter sent to my mother at that time. At the end of the letter I wrote:
.. You poisoned the most beautiful day of my life.
Then I placed my mother in a remote residence. It was very tough, however, I made this final decision as King.
I provoked a war with Russia to strengthen the national power of Sweden. The Swedish navy produced a decisive victory over Russia and I was honoured as a great king.
I put civilians and farmers ahead of aristocrats to gain support from them.
That incurred some hatred from the aristocrats and they started to plot my assassination.
The tragedy happened when I was 46.

Giuseppe Verdi made an opera Un ballo in Maschera (A Masked Ball) inspired by this incident. The opera passes on my tragedy to this day.

Skansen är Sveriges nationalzoo. Det är en djurpark och ett friluftsmuseum på Södra Djurgården, grundat 1891 av Artur Hazelius.
Skansen invigdes den 11 oktober 1891. Namnet kommer från den skans som Karl XIV Johan lät uppföra åt sin son Oscar I att användas som lekplats, denna skans låg intill nuvarande Håsjöstapeln. Det första området omfattade marken kring Bollnästorget och Fågeldammarna med ingång via Hasselbacksporten, totalt 29 493 m². 1892 utökades det med Belvedereområdet kring Bredablick, 174 411 m², och området blev då mer än sex gånger så stort. Ytterligare markförvärv har gjorts under årets lopp, och området omfattar idag 30 hektar. Den räknas som djurpark sedan 1924 då Grillska donationen tillförde det nödvändiga kapitalet som krävdes för att kunna bygga det dåvarande aphuset (numera privatägda Skansen-akvariet nedanför Solliden), varpå Skansen uppnådde det artantal som då krävdes för att få räknas som djurpark.
Skansen var under de första femtio åren en "mjölkko" vars vinst finansierade byggnad och drift av Nordiska museet. Skansen övergick den 1 juli 1963 till att bli en stiftelse med Stockholms stad och staten som huvudmän. Den har sedan dess subventionerats med skattemedel.
På området finns cirka 140 byggnader från Skandinavien, de äldsta är från 1200-talet.
Varje nyårsafton direktsänder SVT uppläsningen av dikten Nyårsklockan vid tolvslaget. Flera andra högtider, som nationaldagen, Valborgsmässoafton, midsommar och Lucia, brukar också uppmärksammas.
Under senare år har den TV-sända allsången på Solliden varje vecka under sommarsäsongen dragit stor publik.
Skansens besöksrekord är från år 1983 med 2,4 miljoner besökare. De senaste årens besökssiffror: 2006 & 2005: ca 1,4 miljoner; 2004 & 2003:ca 1,3 miljoner.
Ein Skansen oder Skanzen ist ein Freizeitpark mit wissenschaftlichen Konzept, eine neuzeitliche Entwicklung der traditionellen Heimatmuseen. Oft wurden ganze Dorfteile als Museumspark deklariert, die Bauten müssen nicht unbedingt wirklich alt sein, oft handelt es sich um originalgetreue Rekonstruktionen, die den Touristenströmen und Kinderhänden besser als die Originale gewachsen sein mögen.
Der Name Skansen stammt von der ersten Anlage dieser Art, 1891 auf Djurgården in Stockholm angelegt. Der Name des Stockholmer Museums ist seit langem, vor allem in Osteuropa, eine international benutzte Bezeichnung für Anlagen ähnlicher Art geworden. Besonders in Polen, Tschechien, der Slowakei, Ungarn und Slowenien sind Skansens beliebte Anziehungspunkte des Fremdenverkehrs.
In der Schweiz entspricht etwa am besten das Freilichtmuseum Ballenberg dem ursprünglichen Skansen-Konzept und so tritt auch das "urschweizerische Erlebnissdörfli" in der Innerschweiz international bereits auch mit der Bezeichnung Skansen bzw. Skanzen auf. In Österreich befindet sich das Freilichtmuseum Stübing.
Die Skansens der Welt kooperieren miteinander in der Internationale Vereinigung der Agrar- und Freilichtmuseen AIMA (Association Internationale des Musées d'Agriculture). Es sind zwischenzeitlich auch einige urbane Museen dazugekommen, sowie auch Industriearchäologiemuseen, Verkehrsmuseen und Museumsbahnen.
Skansen is the first open air museum and zoo in Sweden and is located on the island Djurgården in Stockholm, Sweden. It was founded in 1891 by Artur Hazelius (1833-1901) to show the way of life in the different parts of Sweden before the industrial era.
Skansen est un musée de plein air ainsi qu'un parc zoologique situé sur l'île de Djurgården à Stockholm. Il a été fondé en 1891 par Artur Hazelius afin de montrer le mode de vie en Suède durant les siècles passés.
Au XIXe siècle la Suède, comme beaucoup d'autres pays européens subit de profonds changements. Son mode de vie très rural laisse la place à une société industrialisée, laissant craindre à beaucoup de monde une perte de l'histoire des traditions et coutumes nationales. Artur Hazelius, qui avait auparavant fondé le Nordiska museet sur l'île de Djurgården près du centre de Stockholm, créé alors le premier musée de plein air au monde sur une colline voisine. Skansen faisait initialement partie du Nordiska Museet, mais est devenu indépendant en 1963. Toutefois, les différents objets situés à l'intérieur des bâtiments de Skansen appartiennent toujours au Nordiska Museet.
Skansen regroupe environ 150 constructions provenant de toute la Suède, démontées puis remontées pièce par pièce à leur emplacement définitif, donnant une vue d'ensemble sur la vie en Suède en allant des pauvres villages fermiers aux riches demeures de la noblesse.
Le musée présente également une réplique fidèle d'une petite ville avec les ateliers des artisans qui travaillaient le cuir, l'argent ou encore le verre. Dans le parc du musée, qui s'étend sur une surface de 300 000 m², se trouve un vaste zoo qui montre un large éventail d'animaux scandinaves ainsi que quelques espèces plus exotiques.
Depuis 1903 la place centrale du musée est début décembre le lieu d'un marché de Noël très populaire, qui attire environ 25 000 personnes par jour.
