That's a really nice wooden desk he has there. I think really nice to have balls of solder roll on it and burn. Looks like he would have put down a heat resistant surface like a ceramic tile or even a newspaper to keep his nice desk from getting marred.

@nobux60 As funny as it sounds, after WWII and a shortage of everything, some cars were built to run on kerosine. And, upon looking it up on Wikipedia, there was a tractor designed to start up on gasoline and then switch over to run on kerosine.

@LehmansHardware It's unfortunate that it is so expensive and no argument that it's the best kerosine available in the United States as far as purity and freshness. But, if you use these lamps a lot, it can be pricey.

I wouldn't recommend allowing the bowl or fount to get that low. It will shorten the life of the wick. If the lamp should burn dry it isn't dangerous, it will just go out.

Also, some mantles are slightly radioactive. I wouldn't advise not breathing in the smoke.
