Sons of Zion are a young Aotearoa reggae band who met through church and have been jamming out music ever since. They officially formed their band in 2007, and performed their first gig as Sons of Zion at Mai Time presenter: Olly Coddington's 23rd birthday party on the first weekend of NZ Music Month 2007.
The venue was a large living room in a big old villa... perhaps a bad choice as Sons of Zion rocked the party so hard, and the crowd was raging that much, that the old whare almost fell down!! The guys played two mean sets of roots, rock, and reggae, with some classic funk covers thrown in. Even after an encore, the crowd was still hungry for more.
There were many musicians at the party who were all impressed by Sons of Zion's first ever performance, including singer/songwriter Anna Coddington, Donald a.k.a. MC Oldwun of Nesian Mystik, DJ Substcance (from the bfm True Skool HipHop Show) and KillaManRaro (guitarist from Sola Rosa).
Their performance was such that Mai Time featured Sons of Zion on a NZ Music Month special show, just a week later.*
The boys are currently recording their own original tracks with their own means and are working on building up a bigger repertoire of songs.
One of their main goals is to perform at The 2008 Soundsplash Eco Reggae Fest.
With Aotearoa's clear love for reggae and dub, Sons of Zion definitely have a place in New Zealand music and are a band to keep an eye on.
