After having practiced Parkour for some time now I believe that physical exercise is important because it gives me the ability to act and to overcome physical obstacles. But its the training of the mind that is even more important, because all action comes as a result of thought. Modern society conditions us to react in certain ways to certain things; we see walls and rails as physical barriers. But when we come to look at them properly we realize that the reason we dont cross these barriers is not because of their physical presence but because our brains have been programmed with the idea that they are a barrier. Theres nothing physically stopping us from going over the obstacle but somehow still we dont go across it. Weve created the barrier ourselves; weve limited ourselves. We accept things the way they are without knowing why they are that way. Society has many rules and those rules have been in place for so long that few people can remember the reasons for them. So all we know is that they are there. The things that most people associate with their self, their job, their home, their hobbies and possessions; all of these things they are the things that are important to society but not to the individual. These things are not who you are as a person. You dont stop being you if you lose your job or if you stop going to the bar every night. But people spend so much time connected to society, so much time doing these things that they forget that, they are also; an individual aside from all the things that they do. By thinking in terms of these things, in terms of societies labels we dont just lose our individuality, we lose our freedom of thought and belief. The reason it happens is because we let other people do our thinking for us. Saving us from having to think about things and to make potentially difficult choices. We like it because we dont have to think about it, its easy and we live in the age of convenience. However, at this rate we are never free, were never free to do what we want and we always seem to be doing what we have to, what other people want us to do. We start to get upset about the lack of control our own lives. However, we often forget that it is WE that have given up the freedom; WE have given up the self-control in the first place.
I love being able to go where I want to go without being hindered by walls, rails, fences etc. All the barriers that herd us around like cattle to our final destination.
