MUSIC IS MY LIFE
I have been writing songs for over 23 years.
I started on the guitar at 16, and within a year I began writing demos with a drum machine and a 4-track tape recorder in the early '90s.
I recorded demos in professional studios, and gigged extensively when I lived back in Canada. (1991 - 2001) Then I set my sights outside the Niagara Region, where I was born.
I moved to Los Angeles (2002 - present) to succeed in the music industry, either with a band, or writing and scoring music for TV, Film, Radio, Video Games etc...
I've been featured on Cd compilations.
I was nominated for "Best Metal" in the 2006 SCMAs.
Following that, I won cash prizes for guitar solo contests online at myguitarspace.com.
In 2009 I won "Best Music" for scoring the short film "The Final Stretch" produced by Paul Hextall of Cat Eye Productions. I have a strong alliance with Paul and he keeps me involved in many production shoots.
Presently, I've been occupying my time recording music for Indie films and cable TV. I primarily play the Hard Rock and Metal formats, but since working with the film and TV industry, I've learned that I can write Country, Blues, Soft Rock---pretty much anything that is guitar-driven.
I create 100% original backing tracks using Guitar, Bass, Drum Machines as well as acoustic drums and a wide variety of percussion.
I don't use loops of any kind. All of my instruments are performed or programmed from the ground up. How else could a musician lay claim to writing original music?
I am well-practiced on the guitar and have a home-based studio with plenty of equipment and instruments to get the job done.
The one thing that has turned me off of getting back in a band was learning of the "pay to play" format out here in L A. I don't have enough cash or connections to make that fly at the moment. Besides, I feel that musicians are entertainers and they should always be paid!
The dreaded "pay to play" BS led me on an altered trajectory towards writing for film and TV in the last few years. That was a move to make money and not have to deal with all the responsibilities that come with keeping a band together and creatively moving forward.
Even after putting live gigs behind me for quite some time, I still have the fire to perform live and tour the world, should I be the missing link in an established band, or catch up with all of my writing projects and form another band myself--or maybe I become a "go-to" music guy in the TV and Film industry...hard to say!
It's really difficult to know where to invest your time in the music industry, as there seems to be a shortage of money to be made. People who write and produce their own music in a home studio know that they could live in their studio 24/7 but I NEED to be validated with an income and success. I'm still struggling to make the right connections as many musicians do.
That's why I'm now here in the hope that my dream of making a living with music is not a pipe dream.
