Tips for racing! Last Updated 20 Feb 2012

Tip 1: Use the blue shell, POW block, blooper now?

If you have a blue shell and predict that you will pass the leader without passing through any item boxes at the time he gets hit, Wait until the leader has passed through item boxes and then use it so you can get an item and pass him without him having any items to hinder you. The item you get is based upon what position you were in when you passed through the item box. It is also generally always better to chain bloopers and POW's though watch out for sprawled items after these.

Tip 2: Shock Dodging

The Lightning bolt shock only becomes available through item boxes until 30 seconds in the race (This is also true with the pow block, the blooper and the blue shell.) If you have an item that can dodge a shock hold it until after last passes through item boxes at 30 seconds and then use/chain the dodge item. This is best when an inexperienced player is in the room. In experienced rooms, It is best to look at where last person is at 30 seconds, see if they are going faster than normal or going different routes and estimate where the item boxes are.(If they are golden shrooming going offroad and not passing through the item boxes or bullet billing through the boxes at 30 seconds they would not get the shock. if this is the case look again when approaching the next item boxes) Then when they pass through them, it is possible they have the shock. If someone is bullet billing and last is behind them getting an item box, there is even greater chance last place has the shock. In pro rooms, generally the shock happens after last passes through the next item boxes after they have gotten the shock (earliest time around 36 seconds) or at the second/third last item box on the third lap on luck tracks. However, it is very likely in pro rooms that the holder of the shock will not use his shock item if he sees people in dodge items and will hold the shock further until their dodges have ran out. So i suggest if you have a dodge and you see others in dodges, wait until their dodges have ran out and then instantly use your dodge to possibly have the shock holder dodge you involuntarily. Also a shock can only become available after another shock when 30 seconds has passed since that shock was used, so look at the time a shock happens and it will be available again 30 seconds after that. happy dodging :)

Tip 3 Golden Mushroom, Star and Mega

When you are shrooming with a golden mushroom it is faster not to trick on ramps. Tricks on ramps have more air time. It is faster because the boost you receive on the ground will be cancelled out by shrooming with the golden mushroom. It is also faster not to trick with star and mega too.

Tip 4: Bad Spot Near The Finish Line

When you are in a bad spot and are near the finish line (7-12th) and are waiting for the item boxes to roll it is likely you may get a speed item. It is better to not trick and spam the use item button to hurry up with your powerful item to the end.

Tip 5: 100cc racing

In 100cc it is faster to do mini-turbos than to wheelie. This is also true for tricking than to wheelie. So it is best to take wide lines and do two mini-turbos than to take a tight line and get one mini-turbo. Also, when going around corners that would normally require two miniturbos straight after the other in 150cc, add in a very short wheelie between the first and second miniturbos in 100cc

Tip 6: Know Your Item Boxes

It is very helpful when you know what kind of items are eligible for your position and the chance of those items coming to you. Especially The Thundercloud and Speed Items. Tip 7: Effectiveness of Mushrooms

It is faster to use a mushroom going around a corner then on a straightaway. This is because the speed you are going while drifting is slower than when you are wheelying. This is because it is not AT ALL faster to shroom while wheelying then shrooming while not wheelying (shrooms have a fixed speed). So when golden shrooming, I suggest not wheelying as you will be not susceptible to wheelie bumpage and you can manoeuvre better around.
