Carlos Balam Vazquez was born in Mexico City in 1979. At the age of seven, he began improvising at the keyboard, and formally started piano lessons at the age of eleven. In Mexico, he was first a pupil of Ernesto Gómez Santana for seven years, and later continued his studies with Professor Alejandro Gómez de Agüero at the National School of Music in Mexico City for one year. He was a prize-winner in the 2000 National School of Music Piano Competition.
In 1998 he began studies at the University of North Texas College of Music, as a student of Berthe Odnoposoff. He obtained the Bachelor of Music degree magna cum laude in Piano Performance and a specialization in Piano Pedagogy in August 2003. In August 2007 he received a Master of Arts degree in Music from the University of North Texas, where he studied piano under the direction of Mexican-American pianist Gustavo Romero. He has also taken lessons and participated in master classes with professors like Isabel Ladrón de Guevara, Alejandro Corona, Anatoly Zatin, Harold Martina, Adam Wodnicki and Vladimir Viardo.
In Mexico, Carlos has performed in Mexico City, Baja California, Puebla, Durango and Veracruz, where he has participated in recitals organized by the Veracruz Institute of Culture and the "Conciertos Líricos" Association. In Texas, he has performed in several cities, also taking part in recitals organized by the Dallas Music Teachers Association. In 2004, he was a state finalist for the Student Affiliate Young Artist Performance contest, organized by the Texas Music Teachers Association. He was on the faculty of The Master's Touch School of Music and Performing Arts in Grapevine, Texas from 2002 to 2008.
