Saying that the Greek Ministry of Culture has not protected Diolkos is a HUGE understatement; they have ENSURED the monument's deterioration through a hoard of illegal behaviours while persistently, invariably & SLYLY trying to cover-up even OTHER responsible parties.

Some DOCUMENTS illustrating the lies by which the Ministry of Culture and the Canal Company(*) devastate Diolkos:
http://www.facebook.com/alb...
(*) which comprised by law in its board of Directors a HIGH OFFICIAL of the MINISTRY OF FINANCE & TWO local government representatives

The western end of Ancient Diolkos, excavated between 1956-1960, was left victim to its position alongside the Corinth Canal FOR THE WAKE OF EVERY TRANSITING VESSEL TO DESTROY.

Usually people think ancient monuments are left to decay because there are so many of them and there is shortage of funds. This is not true, at least as far as Diolkos is concerned: for long decades the Greek Ministry of Culture has kept themselves TOTALLY unprepared to act. They were UNABLE to absorb 300.000 euros destined to Diolkos by the Ministry of Finance (maybe as a cover-up for THEIR role in the Canal frauds?) in 2007!

Appallingly, the Ministry of Culture had ABANDONED Diolkos' protection to its destroyers (the Canal Company, directly supervised by the Minister of FINANCE and engaged since at least 1982 in a series of MOCK studies for the whole Canal) systematically MISINFORMING everybody about both their own AND the Canal's doings or intentions!

The Ministry of Culture kept backing-up the FRAUDS of the Canal, while even simple rescue actions were DENIED for Diolkos! Even its physical existence is hushed up in almost every Canal document.

When the Canal's management was privatized in 2001 (a deal that later failed) the Ministry LIED ABOUT HAVING TAKEN PROTECTION MEASURES FOR DIOLKOS!

In 2006, both the local ephorate AND the Directorate for the restoration of Ancient Monuments presented falsified (but different!) descriptions of the erosion! For DAAM, the longest devastated stretch of Diolkos presented just "subsidence" (it followed there was no hurry in protecting it from the sea!). The local office DISREGARDED the devastated parts of the monument PRESENTING as its only problem the stones that had fallen from A PART OF IT.

Subsequent promises for a PRESUMED "preliminary" study, supposed to be ready in July 2007, failed to materialize. A Master Plan, approved in Sept. 2007 not only did NOT lead to any protection but, as it turned out, linked ANY works on Diolkos to such impossible terms that it was BOUND to bring everything to a halt... as indeed happened under false assertions of care!

Between other things, the Master Plan reproposed a 1987 study for redoing the low walls of the whole canal, not bothering to mention its title and vaguely PRETENDING it referred to Diolkos. The study (one of three for tearing down what remained of the original low walls of the Canal in order to gain some width while pretending to conserve the Canal as a monument!) had been examined in 1992 by a committee which REJECTED basic aspects of it but retained the widening idea. In their 27-pages report the committee (including various Polytechnic professors and representatives of the Ministry of Public Works AND the Technical Chamber of Greece!) DIDN'T DENOUNCE the CANAL frauds (nor even mentioned Diolkos).

It seems the ONLY THING Greek Authorities DID schedule again and again was to ABANDON Diolkos! The Ministry of Culture continues to produce lies and inconsistencies at every attempt of control...

Authorities are NEVER short of promises. Seemingly addressing the monument's needs, their "decisions" REALLY reflect what they think will be asked by a nosy Judge. A study for a wavebreaker (commissioned in the Fall of 2010 through the Ministry of Public Works), could very well be the CONTINUATION of this SERIES OF FRAUDS.

Over 8,800 concerned citizens from 122 countries have signed the ongoing petition for Saving & Restoring Diolkos: http://www.thepetitionsite....

Warmest thanks to all!
