I think it works because as soon as the wire touches the magnet, a current is flowing through the battery the wire and also the magnet because there all conductive materials. A battery produces (correct me if I'm wrong) a direct current, so the voltage should have no negative phase so it will go ...

Too bad the whole string quartet is slightly out of tune, so it just doesn't fell in place together with very few samples they where still using..

You can absolutely notice it if you compare it to some of his other performances.
