I was being sarcastic about the whole religious thing, since the same devotion to the government can be compared to devotion to religion (and in fact the Bible says to respect the government "because it was put in place by God" and all that shit). But seriously, the government should not have access to every single individual's information in the U.S. (or any other country for that matter).

And yeah, he did seem to be talking out of his ass, kind of like he does in The God Delusion regarding the pre-Big Bang hypotheses besides God (only with citations since it's a book). The difference is that Hitler, Stalin, Mao, etc. were systematically brainwashing their people and unifying them under dogmatic ideas, just like religious leaders have, with similar results (whether those dogmas were religious, political/economic, or a mix) of immense numbers of deaths and immense amounts of power which the people in charge who pushed that dogmatic belief achieved. I wasn't making hysteria out of it, I was taking Simonisax' question at face value. Yes, it's true that hunting keeps the population of animals under control, and that it's socially considered moral to use the meat that you killed (although ultimately the whole "wasting good meat" argument is invalid on the part of those who use it--not saying you did--because the meat is going to be used by some type of organism).
