About this user

I was a flight attendant for 20 years, 5 of them for Pan American. I find my self missing those days more and more the older I get. Those were the most glamorous, and fun 5 years of my life. I think you would have to have worked for Pan Am to understand what a special company this was and why it is dearly missed. My love for this company started when I was very young, maybe 5 or 6. I remember being very excited about my first airplane ride and its still very vivid in my mind today. We were parked at our gate at LAX and I remember looking out the window and seeing this giant plane pull up next to us and looking at the tail with this giant blue ball on it and asking my mom where do they fly to? My mom said oh Pan Am, they fly all over the world and that was it, I was hooked on Pan Am. When we got home I just had to have a toy Pan Am plane. It was battery powered with 4 spinning propellers. In 1986 we moved to Florida and I got a job working for Argenbright security at Orlando International airport. Still fascinated with air travel I watched crew members go through security. One day it hit me. I had to be a flight attendant. My parents were not very happy with my decision and I remember my mom telling me that Phillis Diller makes fun of male flight attendants. Every day I would look at the employment section and there it was, Piedmont was having interviews at a hotel in Orlando but I was not hired. Then one day looking at the paper again there it was, Pan Am was having interviews for flight attendants and I all most fell over! I went but got rejected. Looking at the paper another day I saw Pan Am was having another job fair at there training facility in Miami. I went there with the determination of getting hired and did, talk about a natural high. Training was very stressful. We stared with 110 but only 69 of us graduated. I got my first choice of bases, London. Flying out of London was kind of boring as we only went to the US where New York, Miami, Los Angeles and Washington based flight attendants flew all over Europe and south America I did however get to live in London for 2 years. One of my roommates in London got a special trip to Rio and I was mad. I remember begging crew scheduling to give me a special trip too. One day on reserve, the phone rang and it was crew scheduling telling me that they were calling me early so I would have time to pack. They told me that I was dead heading to Frankfurt were I was to meet up with the New York crew for a 6 day layover in Nairobi Africa. This was my job? My life was like one gigantic party and boy could Pan Am crew's party on layovers. Sometimes, the first class F/As would make sangria from leftover wine and fruit and we would all (17 of us) be pretty happy buy the time we got to our hotel. In Jan 1989 I transferred to New York as I was very junior and could not hold a good flying line. I would bid for reserve and pray that a Senior F/A would call in sick and I would get their trip; maybe to Paris or to Moscow or to Switzerland or to Sao Paulo or to some fun place in this world. In 1991 Pan Am started to furlough flight attendants in New York, so if I wanted to keep my job I would have to transfer to Miami and I did. Delta was involved with us at the time trying to help us but only took the crown jewels, meaning our Europe routes, and then they dropped us. We shut down Dec 4, 1991.
