They were fighting the two greatest industrial powers in the world on two seperate fronts as well as the entire commonwealth (three fronts if you count the campaigns in Africa). They were running out of fuel reserves and their armament factories and workers were steadily being bombed by the allies. After Kursk they lacked the resources to hold the vast territory they'd captured. Failure was inevitable from that point onward.
