About Sisulu Walker Charter School

The Sisulu-Walker Charter School of Harlem (formerly Sisulu Children's Academy-Harlem Public Charter School) was founded by ten men and women with one mission: to create a truly outstanding public school for children living in Central Harlem, a neighborhood with historically low-performing schools and a dearth of quality public school options. At the time Sisulu-Walker was formed, the percentage of children in Central Harlem schools scoring at or above grade level in reading was an abysmal 26%, indicating broad academic distress. The founders of Sisulu-Walker and its management company, Victory Schools, resolved to exceed these results.

Sisulu Walker Charter School of Harlem is proud to share the rigorous instruction, high expectations, and superior work that is the rule, rather than the exception, at our elementary school. We pride ourselves on our understanding of how to purposely evaluate and use assessments and administrative support systems that improve student achievement.

Last year, our Harlem school hosted Ms. Cindy McCain and regularly welcomes visitors with whom we can share ideas for success and methods for achieving and maintaining high test scores. Most recently, Sisulu-Walker received an "A" on the New York City Schools 2007-2008 Report Card.

Sisulu-Walker has attained national recognition in Reading First, earned high test scores across third and fourth grades, and hosted numerous high-profile visitors, including--just this October--a group of twenty-four educators from China, who were looking to this under-resourced area for inspiration. The unprecedented international exchange served as a breath of fresh air for the young and eager students of our school.
