Dia dhuit. I enjoy long walks on the beach, romantic novels and creationists. I'm also partial to mormons. Although I have to walk away if the conversation exceeds a comfortable five minutes.

For clarification, I support the ridiculously named 'War on Terror,' for the reason that it is categorically NOT a campaign for justice against Western imperialist ambitions in the Middle East, on behalf of the down-trodden. The stated aims of al-Qaeda include the restoration of the Caliphate, the Islamic Empire. Among other things, they wish to conquer the lands of the infidel, dissolve state secularism, quash freedom of speech, institute captial punishment, and abolish education for girls. We cannot coexist with those that would give their lives for this cause. Cultural relativism is absolutely meaningless in this context.

With this in mind, we cannot afford to lose in Afganistan. It is imperative that the forces of NATO defeat the Mujahideen.

On the totally separate issue of Iraq, I support the coalition invasion of 2003. My reasons are manifold. According to International law, Saddam Hussein, and the Ba'ath Party, had lost all semblance of sovereignty over Iraq. They were responsible for genocide against their own people. They had engaged in hostile action against neighbouring sovereign nations, twice. They had harboured international terrorists, namely Ramzi Ahmed Yousef, and Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. Finally, they had been developing WMD, and continued to defy UN resolutions to comply with weapons inspections and to disarm completely.

First, acts of genocide, and the humanitarian cause. For those unaware of the nightmare that was life under Saddam Hussein, I recommend the Republic of Fear by Kanan Makiya. Put yourself alongside one of the 150,000 Kurds killed in the genocidal al-Anfal campaign. Or the 100,000 widows, and 300,000 orphans left in the wake. Maybe you might have suffered famine alongside your Marsh Arab neighbours in southern Iraq, caused by the deliberate disruption of the flow of the Tigris and Euphrates into the marshlands. If you weren't tortured and killed by the secret police, you probably had your tongue, or hands cut off. You may have been forced to watch the Republican Guard rape your daughter, sister, or wife.

Second, Saddam Hussein had invaded Iran in 1980 heralding a war that lasted for eight long years, and killing 1,000,000 young Iraqi and Iranian soldiers. Granted, this war was waged with the support of the US, but this horrible fact provides all the more reason to rectify previous abuses of justice. In addition, Iraq invaded, and annexed, Kuwait in August 1990, leading to the first Gulf War.

On terrorism. Ramzi Ahmed Yousef, nephew to Khalid Shaikh Mohammed (a senior al-Qaeda member), one of the planners of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, entered the United States with an Iraqi passport. Abu Musab al-Zarqawi is known to have been in Iraq under Saddam Hussein. In a January 2005 internet recording, Zarqawi condemned democracy as "the big American lie" and said participants in Iraq's January 30 election were enemies of Islam. Zarqawi stated "We have declared a bitter war against democracy and all those who seek to enact it...Democracy is also based on the right to choose your religion [and that is] against the rule of God." He is directly responsible for the loss of thousands of lives.

With regard to WMD, prior to the 2003 invasion, the UN unanimously (including Syria) passed a resolution calling for Saddam Hussein to disarm or face serious consequences. There was, at that time, significant reason to believe that Saddam Hussein was being obscurantist for a reason. Needless to say, there was no compliance, and there were serious consequences.

It is for these reasons that I supported the toppling of the evil dictator. The war itself has not been pleasant, many many innocent people have lost their lives. But, just reflect for a moment. It is not the coalition forces that are raining terror on the people of Iraq, it is the admixture of insurgent forces intent on causing as much damage to the fledgling state as possible, that are ultimately responsible. It is they that purposefully target civillians in shopping markets and mosques. It is they that send drugged teenagers and Downs' Syndrome adults into busy thoroughfares strapped with explosives.

The invasion itself probably was illegal, just like the US/UK enforcement of no-fly-zones in Northern and Southern Iraq, ever since 1991, to prevent further acts of genocide. I hardly think that needs defending, nor the technically illegal prevention of genocide by NATO forces in Kosovo in 1999.

So, it comes down to a simple question.
