@emofly17 When you have too much faith in regulation, you're just helping Big Corporations. His point is that you can regulate with reputation and law suits much more effectively than getting permission from bureaucrats bought by corporations.

@DNS99 The point is I worked for 2.5 years as a health policy analyst. So I guess that makes an expert. And I have an army of people who agree with me, too. But that doesn't necessarily make me correct. That's my point. Lot's of "experts" have been wrong about lots of things. LIve with it. You do...

@DNS99 Way ahead of you. many of the things you listed cost-shifting, cross-subsidies, adverse selection are artifacts of government policy -- perverse effects. You're confusion the symptom with the disease. Sorry.

@DNS99 Nice Googling. There are two senses of the term "crowdout". You looked up the wrong one. The point is that the government enjoys a virtual monopoly on roads. When the gov't crowds out so much of what the private sector could do, we don't know what sorts of good things could emerge from ent...

@sidspop Your point about the internet is just a canard. Just because something happened to start out in the public sector doesn't mean that the public sector is necessary for its development. The internet would still be like Minitel if it weren't for the private sector making it a valuable media...

@DNS99 Okay, then perhaps a logic course, then. The whole point of crowdout is that if the government has a monopoly, we don't know what the private sector would do. Second, you just wrong about the progress of rail in the 1800s -- and two-stepped between today and history. Third, there is nothin...

@DNS99 You're terribly confused. Only Amtrak - passenger rail - is nationalized. I don't know to what degree freight lines get subsidy, but they could profit without them. Everything runs by the law of supply and demand. You can't suspend it. // Government has crowded out highways, too. But there...

Thomas Sowell on Intellectuals and Society: Chapter 1 of 5
Thomas Sowell introduces his new book, Intellectuals and Society, and expounds on what he calls the fatal misstep of intellectuals.
@greatleaper Actually he's saying both things. Look at the presence of Cass Sunstein and Tim Geitner in the Administration. Both are "experts" who are attempting to run various aspects of the economy. Both are "skeynsians" Skinnerian Keynesians.
