You can see another photo of Toots in uniform on the New England Conservatory site (the archive). Before joining Goodman, Toots (and Gene Krupa) played with the Boston-based band of Mal Hallett. The NEC site gives his name as "Hal Hallet." Depressing, isn't it, this kind of sloppiness?

Saxophonist Ernie Caceres in this clip. He'd played with Miller, Hackett, and Teagarden. He does the very brief clarinet bit.

The trumpeter is not Paul Webster, but Tommy Stevenson--his predecessor as high-note trumpet man.

Yeah, great piece of music. About the best thing my dear nephew, Bixie, ever did. (Sometimes I get confused over whether I'm Bix's uncle--or an avatar of Bix himself.)
