Horses don't develop laminitis naturally. 19 was slightly over half of this stallion's normal life span. What happened to him? How did he founder? As far as I know, overeating is the only way that a healthy horse develops laminitis/founder.

You do realize that he died at the age of 19 of laminitis, right?

horses are prey animals, they depend on their alpha mares and stallions to keep the herd safe. this is why they race. this is why they try to win

Seriously, is this kind of nastiness doing any good? Racing is a risk, pretty much like most of life. Dealing with horses always involves risk, whether you are racing them, trail riding them, showing them, doing dressage. What is important is why the horses are performing...

schardy, i'm preaching to the choir, but the point is to celebrate these amazing animal athletes and what they've managed to accomplish doing NOT what comes naturally, but what humans have asked of them. man o war and secretariat were both miracles, in a world that has far too few.
