About this user

I am a 46-year-old woman from Kumasi, Ghana. I came to America in 1978 under the sponsorship of a Baptist missionary school. I worked as a secretary/typist on the "a" shift (6:00am - 2:30pm) in area 65 of a large warehouse complex in San Jose, California, for almost eight years while working my way through college. That's when I learned to become fluent in English, cultivated many friendships, and became absorbed into the American life style, which I thoroughly enjoy. I eventually received my masters degree in ichthyology from Stanford University and hope to become an American citizen very soon. My husband, who is from Sierra Leone, is working on his PHD in molecular biology. Many black Americans complain about oppression, but my husband and I only see opportunities in America to become anything we want to be IF we work hard and get an education. I especially admire America's freedom of speech, which is not available in most of the African countries I've lived in or visited. I frequently return to Ghana and its neighboring countries to promote aquaculture for the betterment of my native land, but that is still an uphill battle.
