It is thought that this is the gggggggrandchild of a Portugese song referring to a true incident that occurred in the 13th century.

I knew Peter in the early 60's when he was developing as a singer (pre YT) and attending art college in Maidstone. He sounds very pompous here-not the Peter I remember; but even back then it was "the song, not the singer" and his wide ranging musical tastes were already well developed.
