The Foundation for Shamanic Studies is honored to support the Baniwa Shamanic Revitalization, which includes the filming and creation of a documentary record of snuff-jaguar shaman "Mandu" Manuel da Silva's practice and knowledge; organizing meetings to discuss aspects of indigenous culture and shamanic traditions; and the construction of a Shamans' House (now complete), which will serve as a catalyst for activities to strengthen and revitalize indigenous culture of the Baniwa people of the Aiary River.
This Baniwa Shamanic Revitalization was undertaken at the specific invitation of the Baniwa people and Mandu, who is in his eighties, and his family, who wish to preserve and pass on the shamanic knowledge of their people. Dr. Robin Wright, FSS Field Associate, who brought this project to our attention, has been working with the Baniwa for years to help them achieve this goal.
When Dr. Wright returned from the inauguration of the Shamans' House, he said: "The initial goals of our project were fully realized. The Shamans' House of Knowledge is a beautiful construction, marvelous architecture that is like the Baniwa people's view of the cosmos materialized. They performed dances which I had never seen before - we filmed them all. Best of all, there is now a large group of apprentices (12) to the two head shamans. This revitalization project can be credited for having been responsible for that. This is not the end of the project by any means, but just the beginning; the Shamans' House of Knowledge has been inaugurated, and now we need to sustain it." See the full 17:48 minute video of the inauguration ceremony: http://www.shamanism.org/media/video/...
While much was achieved with the completion of the Shamans' House, including 12 new apprentices for Mandu to teach, one of them his daughter Ercilia, ongoing assistance is needed to continue the revitalization. Mandu and his family are specifically requesting aid for the purchase of a new outboard motor for the boat used by the village. River travel is essential to communication among the various tribes along the river. It is how Mandu's family contacted the other villages to let them know about the Shamans' House and the way supplies are obtained. Their old motor is constantly breaking down and is not expected to last much longer. Donations to help them obtain a new motor and for the purchase of fuel, as well as support for the recording and documentation of Mandu's shamanic knowledge for future generations, are urgently needed now. We hope to raise $12,000 to continue this project for another year.
To make a donation to help Mandu and his people, donate easily and securely online at http://www.shamanism.org/join/donatio...
Thank you.

The three pillars of the Foundation include teaching, researching, and preserving shamanic knowledge. These aspects of Foundations work are carried out through the workshops and advanced training programs, the Living Treasures of Shamanism and Indigenous Assistance, and the Shamanic Knowledge Conservatory.
The Living Treasures of Shamanism program provides an annual lifetime stipend to exceptionally distinguished indigenous shamans in less-developed countries, where their age-old knowledge of shamanism and shamanic healing is in danger of extinction. Special care is given to providing the economic assistance necessary to allow these Living Treasures to pass on their knowledge to their people. Read more at: http://www.shamanism.org/fssinfo/fssw...
Two of the last Tibetan shamans living in a refugee camp in Nepal, have been appointed as Living Treasures: Pau Rhichoe and Pau Dhondup.
The eldest shaman, Pau Karma Wangchuk, was the Foundation's first Living Treasure. Pau Wangchuk recently passed on, though Foundation Field Associate, Sarah Sifers continues to work with his son and grandson waiting to see if perhaps Pau Wangchuk's grandson will have the fate to be a Lhapa (shaman).
Dr. Sifers, founder of Indigenous Lenses, created a beautiful film about the three paus. Her film "The Fate of the Lhapa" provides a moving look into the lives and healing work of these elder Tibetan shamans. To obtain the complete film, contact Sarah Sifers at www.indigenouslenses.org.
The music is composed by William Susman and features performances by the renown cellist and Grammy-nominee Joan Jeanrenaud and Tibetan Vocalist Tsering Wangmo. More info on the film score at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/williamsusman2

Ram Dass and Michael Harner discuss the nature of consciousness and the spiritual, psychedelics, and shamanism - with wisdom and humor - in these selected clips from their January 2003 dialogue and discussion in Marin County, California at the Foundation's annual gathering of FSS Council members.
Ram Dass' talks, teachings, books, and exquisitely described anecdotes brought Eastern philosophy and practice to millions of people. His unique combination of devotion and scholarship brought the spiritual heart of India to the West. Beyond that, Ram Dass' personal candor and accessibility continue to ease seekers into heartfelt, sincere spirituality. In February 1997, Ram Dass experienced a stroke. The result was paralysis and expressive aphasia, caused by damage to anterior regions of the brain. This has effectively ended his ability to travel and lecture, but it has in no way atrophied his ability to teach and inspire. His base is now on Maui, where he can focus on his healing as well as communicate globally via the internet. (From Ram Dass' website: http://www.ramdass.org/)
