1. Major is happy , minor is sad, 7th is intriguing, use sus chords for colours
2. Take a key, use the 5th and its seventh in the song to add some colours.
3. pluck the strings in between if you think that the strumming is becoming more and more repetitive.
4. Use walkdowns and walkups of the baseline. eg. Cmajor to Aminor. beatles used this to perfection.
