Am I Normal...er...Sexually Speaking?

Never talking to others about what we're thinking often leads us to conclude little more than nonsense. But sexual futurists are learning from a global conversation, free from the usual constraints of threats, coercion or social stigma. The results: a more informed, wiser and more compassionate people.

When it comes to sex the world is sadly uninformed. "Sadly," because we often come to conclusions that seem so right to us--but they only seem right because we know so little. Even the most educated and financially successful among us--even in 2012--usually know very little about human sexuality. In the forefront of the human race the gay population is, as usual, leading the way. Why gays? Because they have been forced by the abuse and stigma from the surrounding society to deal on a daily basis with the reality of who they are sexually.

The world has also been touched by the genius of sexual futurists of the past who have spoken what, in hindsight, seems so self-evident. One of many, Alfred Kinsey sought to overcome the ignorance of his day two generations ago by conducting what he thought would be the best kind of study of human sexuality, simply asking large enough samples about what was normal for them. He and his team asked thousands. In his book, Sexual Behaviour in the Human Male (1948), he concluded that when it came to our tendency to file people away in one of two files that,
Males do not represent two discrete populations, heterosexual and homosexual. The world is not to be divided into sheep and goats. Not all things are black nor all things white. It is a fundamental of taxonomy that nature rarely deals with discrete categories. Only the human mind invents categories and tries to force facts into separated pigeon-holes. The living world is a continuum in each and every one of its aspects. The sooner we learn this concerning human sexual behavior, the sooner we shall reach a sound understanding of the realities of sex.

No better now that we should add a third category like "bi-sexual" for three categories would be only microscopically more helpful than a mere two. According to Kinsey's research we are actually going to have to go to the trouble of getting to know each person individually if we want to understand them sexually. This will have a profound impact on our finding a life partner because simply having sex with someone will tell us relatively little. We will have to apply ourselves to learn how to safely talk to and listen to one another. Some people will find this prospect so frightening that they will find any excuse to avoid it, including invoking the wrath of the Almighty. But it is time in our social evolution for the conversations to begin because we are all in this together; what's not normal is to hate the human race for being what it is.
