Hello friends! I am currently in the lovely city of Leon, Guanajuato, Mexico, which will be graced by a visit from Holy Father Benedict XVI in late March. Thus far, I am intrigued by the highly freestyle nature of church music here in Mexico! Organists are far less note-obsessed than in the US and will very often break into impromptu improvisations after a verse in a hymn. It may have something to do with the fact that many if not most organists and cantors are also priests! Cantors too are far less technically concerned and I have noted that a given hymn is often sung differently in different churches! In short, the idea seems to be sentiment over technique, and this suits me fine, as I needed a rest from the musical perfectionism so often in found in sacred music circles in the US! Stay tuned!
