Following the German invasion, a new pro-Nazi government in Serbia had been initially established under the leadership of Milan Asimovic. However, he was soon replaced by Nedic, who with German support, was the puppet Serbian Prime Minister from August 1941 until October 1944.

The persecution of Yugoslavia's Jewish population had started six months before the Nazi invasion when the government of Serbia issued legislation restricting Jewish participation in the economy and university enrolment. As soon as the German's established the puppet state of Serbia, the Nedic regime issued anti-Jewish laws, deprived Jews of their property and livelihood, and almost immediately established three concentration camps for Jews, Gypsies and others. These were at Sadmiste, Banjica close to Belgrade, and Nis in southern Serbia. By 1942, an extermination camp for CHILDREN at Smederevska Palanka. Thousands of others were deported to other concentration camps such as Auschwitz, Dachau and Buchenwald, where most would perish...

Vojvodina Province in Serbia already enjoys partial autonomy,including an independent judiciary and special economic privileges. Yet Vojvodina's full autonomous status was revoked under former Serbian president Slobodan Milosevic.Now the Serbian government is trying to maintain control. Belgrade wants to prevent Vojvodina from becoming a sovereign state with Novi Sad as its capital. Serbian nationalists feel they have made enough concessions and fear that Vojvodina will go the way of Kosovo and declare independence.
