A lovely performance of a gorgeous piece of music. To me the great tragedy of "Vanessa" is that it could maybe have been something great if it had had a decent libretto. Barber wrote wonderful music, but Menotti's words sank it, in case the silly story didn't already accomplish that. If only ...
