EXCERPT FROM THE GUIDE TO CANADIAN CREATURES:Bernardicus Invulgaris (Uncommon Bernard)
Branch of the vertebrate, mammal class, Homo sapiens sapiens species, adolescent subspecies, male sex
The Bernard is an extremely elusive and rare animal. As a result of the Great Bernard Hunt of 32 000 BCE, most Bernards have been hunted down, killed and exposed in Saskatchewan gift shops: indeed, it is rumored that only one still exists in the snowy, igloo-riddled regions of Canada.
Bernards are highly deceptive creatures, having practiced the art of falsehoods though acting, one of the main distractions from hunting and mercilessly flogging polar bears and lumberjacks. They will use this talent for deception to their advantage, making themselves seem much more intellectual than they really are by quoting famous authors, constantly reading obscure mythic fiction or fantasy novels, or engaging in long-winded debates about the validity of two-by-fours in Quebec. The average IQ-blessed person, however, will be able to realize that "Shake-spear" is actually an action presented in the present tense, that books are better read right side up and that wooden planks, being inanimate objects, are not Catholic and therefore have no place in Quebec.
The Bernard may attempt to baffle the more dull-witted of hunters by using a highly developed and archaic-sounding vocabulary, including long, incomprehensible and possibly made-up words such as "lackaday", "curmudgeon" and "waddle" in place of the usually English layman's terms. If such a technique is used, the best defense against it consists in shooting the Bernard in the mouth before it confuses its victim to such a degree that one can only stare in horror as it first rambles about how ants are going to take over the world by using nuclear weapons, then mercilessly and disgustingly devouring its victim and/or defenestrating it.
The Bernard can easily be distinguished from the rest of the adolescent subspecies by its appearance, which has been called "hippyish", "weird", "stupid", "unbefitting" and "late to dinner". Needless to say, the Bernard's wardrobe is eclectic, to complement its rather scraggly and overall unkempt hair. The Bernard is a great amateur of hippy clothing including sweaters, tie-dye shirts and socks. Another distinguishing feature is its constant wearing of turtlenecks, the reason for which has not been found.
If one ever encounters a Bernard, the best thing to do to keep one's self alive is to point in the general direction of a distracting object and scream, "Look!" while running in the opposite direction. If this stratagem succeeds, the Bernard may be distracted and not run after one's self. If the stratagem fails, a brutal and often slow and painful death is nearly sure to follow.
