▬ SEVERE CHILDHOOD TRAUMA ▬
☺The quality of the attachment bond between mother and baby affects the childs ability—even as an adult—to feel safe in the world, trust others, handle stress, and rebound from disappointment. Early-life trauma disrupts this important attachment bond, resulting in adult relationship difficulties.
☻Emotional symptoms of trauma: * Shock, denial, or disbelief * Anger, irritability, mood swings * Guilt, shame, self-blame * Feeling sad or hopeless * Confusion, difficulty concentrating * Anxiety and fear * Withdrawing from others * Feeling disconnected or numb.
Childhood trauma increases the risk of future trauma
☻Traumatic experiences in childhood can have a severe and long-lasting effect. Children who have been traumatized see the world as a frightening and dangerous place. When childhood trauma is not resolved, this fundamental sense of fear and helplessness carries over into adulthood, setting the stage for further trauma.
☻Childhood trauma results from anything that disrupts a child's sense of safety and security, including: * An unstable or unsafe environment * Separation from a parent * Serious illness * Intrusive medical procedures * Sexual, physical, or verbal abuse * Domestic violence * Neglect * Bullying
☻Certain childhood stressors cause extreme emotional trauma and may lead to serious behavior problems. ♥Prolonged stress due to financial struggles or poverty; ♥ Separation and loss due to divorce, death, moves; ♥ Witnessing domestic violence or substance abuse by parents; ♥ Environmental and cultural stressors such as violence in the community, natural disasters, negative peer culture; ♥ Experiencing abuse or neglect; ♥ Experiencing serious physical illness and hospitalization; ♥ Neurologically related disorders of childhood; ♥ Living with a parent or sibling who has emotional or physical disabilities.
☻Growing up is inevitably a stressful endeavor. Children face loss, separation, sorrow, and other painful emotions during family life transitions and crises. Most children are quite adaptable to normal stress, but parents can help by following these principles for coping with stress in the child's life.
Trauma in young children may be a result of neglect, abuse, witnessing violence or other stressful experiences during the earliest years.
The traumatized child should be allowed to grieve. Under the surface of aggressive or self-destructive behavior, sadness will be revealed.
A common area of difficulty for traumatized children is in school. Poor concentration and feelings of isolation often hamper school progress.
