Fans in northern India on Monday (February 27) continued to celebrate the national hockey team's qualification into the 2012 London Olympics.
India hammered France 8-1 in the finals of the Olympic qualifier tournament at the Major Dhyan Chand National stadium in New Delhi on February 26.
Drag flick specialist Sandeep Singh led the Indian team to a majestic win by scoring five goals and became the leading goal scorer of the tournament with 16 goals.
His father, Gurcharan Singh, praised his performance along with the team's.
"I am very happy, it's all by the grace of God. I am so happy and was touched when the legislator came to congratulate me at 12.30 in the morning. We are all very happy. India did not win by Sandeep's goals but by their unity and team spirit. We hope that internal differences don't crop up between them and they also win a medal at the Olympics," said Gurcharan Singh as he spoke to reporters in Shahbad city of Haryana state.
Fans in Amritsar city of Punjab state also expressed their delight at the Indian team's victory.
Gurdas Singh Sekhon, a lecturer, gushed over the team's form, adding that he hoped they would bring home the gold.
"Yesterday, the superb form in which the Indian team played and defeated France by a huge margin was heartening. We hope that the same will be repeated in the Olympics and our team will win a gold medal in the Olympics and our best wishes are with them," said Sekhon.
Meanwhile, in Chandigarh city, Haryana Chief Minister, Bhupinder Singh Hooda, congratulated the Indian team for the win and said players like Sandeep Singh and Sardar Singh had made the state proud with their achievements.
"Hockey was earlier the most prestigious sport in the country and India was known to be a hockey powerhouse amongst the whole world. But our performance had dipped as well. However, yesterday the way our team played was great, and we qualified for the Olympics. Players from Haryana played particularly well. Sardar Singh won the man of the series award while Sandeep Singh won the man of the match award. Both are from Haryana and are Deputy Superintendents of the Police, and were made so in our regime. In fact, the whole team played very well,' Hooda said.
With this win the Indian team has buried the ghost of 2008, when they failed for the first time after 80 years to qualify for the Olympics.
India, ranked 10th in the world, remained undefeated in the entire qualifying tournament, scoring the maximum number of goals.

StoryParamilitary troopers based in India's northern Punjab state seized 13-kilograms of heroin (drug) on Thursday (February 23), worth 650 million rupees, as per the international black market.
The heroin was being smuggled from Pakistan.
Deputy Inspector General of Ferozepur range Border Security Force, Rajesh Gupta, said other then heroine, one Chinese Automatic pistol of 9 M.M Caliber, 10 live cartridges along with two magazines and one-kilogram opium were also recovered from the Khemkaran sector.
"When the two-three intruders were around 20 metres away from the fencing, our party deployed at the post challenged them. They started firing on our troopers, so our troopers also open fire in retaliation and after firing, they left the material and ran away. In the morning, when a search operation was carried out, we recovered 13 packets of heroine, one packet of opium, five bundles of FICN (Fake Indian Currency Note) having denomination of rupees one thousand, one pistol, two magazines, 10 live cartridges and seven SIM cards," said Gupta in Amritsar city.
Gupta added that body of an intruder was also found during the search operation.
"During the search operation, we also recovered a dead body of an intruder, which was around 30 metres away, towards Pakistan," added Gupta.
Gupta further said that night patrolling party observed some suspicious moments along the border. The intruders fired at the night patrolling party, however, when the troopers fired in retaliation, the intruders ran back into the Pakistani territory.
Patrolling along the border has been increased after the tip-offs that smugglers based in Pakistan are trying to sneak in drugs into India.
