Since 1978, Lesbian & Gay Youth Manchester (LGYM) has provided support, social, participatory learning and empowerment activities for all kinds of young lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex and non-heteronormative
people from all over Greater Manchester and the North West region.
Since moving from Bloom Street in 1988 to the current purpose built building, LGYM umbrella groups including LIKT Young Lesbian & Bisexual Women's Peer Support Health Project, Energise Young Gay, Bisexual & Trans Men's Group, Manchester Central Under 19's Group, Trans Youth Manchester and various other LGBTQI projects such as Peer Support Project, have used the Gay Centre (AKA The Sidney Street Project AKA Manchester LGBTQI Centre), situated on Sidney Street, off Oxford Road (Opposite main entrance to Manchester Metropolitan University Students' Union).

About this user
The central location of the Manchester LGBTQI Centre is also significant, in that a disproportionately large number of LGBTQI people are drawn to Central Manchester from all over the UK and internationally, requiring a safe, supportive, non-commercial, drink/drugs free space such as the Centre to provide much needed help, advice, support and guidance which cannot be found elsewhere in Manchester City Centre.
Unfortunately, this also means that the Centre is located on land which is highly desirable to property developers, being surrounded by highly profitable multi-storey student flats virtually on campus for Manchester Metropolitan University Students.
Unfortunately, this Manchester City Council-owned building has been neglected for several years and will be shut down by Manchester City Council from December 2007, after LGYM recently received formal notice to vacate the premises from Manchester Youth Services within sixteen weeks.
Save The Gay Centre Manchester Campaign Collective 2007 was formed shortly after this, and is being largely run by and for LGBTQI young people, their friends and families, LGBTQI user groups, members and allies who actively use and support the Centre as a valuable community resource in a historically significant purpose built
building.
The following is a brief list with website details of the LGBTQI groups which are either affected or will cease to exist as a result of the Centre's closure from December 2007:
