Sarena Hashim is a well known public figure. She was a TV and recording artiste - a household name in Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei in the 70s.

Sarena was a versatile ENTERTAINER - a singer, dancer, song/lyric writer, and a talented actress.

Sarena first sang at a concert at the age of 5 and won her first trophy at 14. Her first TV debut was the weekly musical "Tiga Juita" in the late 60s.

Sarena's voice is often referred to as sweet, melodious, and pleasing to the ears. Over the years in the 70s, Sarena made regular TV appearances in Malaysia, Singapore & Brunei. She sang in Malay, English, Hindi, Mandarin and Arabic. She recorded nearly 200 songs for her TV shows, of which many were orchestrated by the Radio & Television Malaysia Orchestra. Her most popular TV performance was the show she hosted - "SARENA" In Saturday Night Entertainment (Hiburan Malam Minggu), telecasted by TV Malaysia in 1976. Some of the songs are featured in this channel.

Sarena also recorded nearly 100 songs in Malay with EMI (single, EPs and LPs). Her albums were produced by Reggie Verghese of the "Quest" fame, and by other famous producers like Ahmad Nawab, Kassim Masdor and S. Atan.

In "Kenangan Manis" the lyrics she wrote were of her fond memories of her visit to India - hosted by EMI Bombay, where she met some great names in Bollywood. She also wrote lyrics for other 'greats' like Sugiman Jahuri, Anita Sarawak, Zain Azman.

She acted in TV dramas and in her own musical/sitcoms, and wrote several scripts for her sitcoms. She acted in one feature film "Menanti Hari Esok". Ironically, this film seems to have been an impending finale.

In 1977, at the peak of her popularity, she shocked the public, especially her fans, with the announcement of a total withdrawal from the entertainment scene. She has maintained a low profile.

After 3 decades, music lovers have begun unearthing her repertoire, and with the re-releasing by EMI of her compilation hits, sarena is being remembered and acknowleged for her contribution to Malaysian Arts .
