This song is about redemption: about overcoming harsh life and conquering the elements of it. It is full of metaphors 'changed from this creature that I am' and 'the night is as dark as the sea' mean more then their literal, spoken meaning.
I still think this version of the song is the bridge between the various types of music genre's. The guitar rift seals it. Even though it's slow by todays standards. I heard Scotty Moore didn't play it on the recording.
