Bill's cancer surgery was in the early '80s and had nothing to do with his passing in 1996. The Brentrup sounds great, and nice playing. BTW check that note you hit at 1:29 and 3:43. You're playing an E note, whereas I'm pretty sure Bill gets an F there, or another "blue note" if it's not F.

On a day when Bill couldn't sing, why didn't the poster have the decency to let his mandolin solos finish on a couple of the vocals?

I've got to echo Dave's comment...I played some shows with Jimmie (and his guitarist Ray Lunsford) in Columbus, Ohio. He was a wonderful person...a true gentleman and incredibly great songwriter. Just can't say enough about Jimmie.

The Grateful Dead didn't record "Gone Home," but the Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band did (it was my idea for us to do it). It didn't earn any big checks, but we felt it was an honor to do Bill's great song.

The guitarist's actual name is Leslie; "Lester" was a wrong assumption based on people calling him "Les." Also: it would've been great, but Don Reno didn't do any studio work with Bill. Sure wish he had; he and Bill made great music whenever they performed together, as I was fortunate to witness ...

"Jerusalem Ridge" is a Bill Monroe composition.

Hard Off is a chain of used goods stores in Japan. They carry a lot of hardware-type stuff, but they also have used clothing and other things, similar to Goodwill...so there ends that meaning possibility.

Thank you so much for posting this, for many of us who never had a chance to see Johnnie pick in person. His ending on "Doug's Tune" proves your grandfather had quite a sense of humor to go along with his great talent! Thanks again...and if there is any more video, we'd love to see it.
