World War II officially began in 1939 when Germany attacked Poland. Hitler and the Nazi Party spread around Europe, and took over much more land.
Hitler came to power in 1933 though. Germany was in the Great Depression, and they needed a really strong leader to help get out of the horrible depression. Then Hitler and his Nazis came singing disturbing chants. Hitler was very emotional and loud and strong. Many Germans fell for him. Although Hitler had brown hair, he believed that the Aryan race (blond hair and blue eyes) was dominant. He made school districts learn about "the perfect human" with the right sized features, right hair color, eye colors, and more. He hated Jews, and put them in concentration camps. He wrote a book, Mein Kampf. (meaning my struggle in German) It blamed everything on the Jews. Hitler idolized himself when he tried to take over the world. And he became an extremely powerful person in the 20th Century.
Hideki Tojo was the Prime Minister of Japan, and it was his idea to bomb Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. After he bombed them he actually said, "We have awakened a sleeping giant." He said that because he was afraid that America was going to do something worse to them. Then two years later, America bombed Japan, not as bad as they bombed America, but they still wanted to get them back. That mission was called "Doolittle's Raid." That's where Danny died in the movie "Pearl Harbor."
Franklin Delano Roosvelt was the president of the United States.
Adolf Hitler was the leader of Germany during ww2.
Benito Mussolini "il duce" was the leader of Italy.
He founded the Fascist party.
Joseph Stalin was the leader of the Soviet Union. (Russia)
Stalin and Hitler made an agreement not to attack each others country. This was called the Nazi-Soviet Pact. Hitler broke this promise when he invaded the Soviet Union. The SU is much bigger than Germany, but Hitler thought he could defeat them because of his opinion about the Aryan race being stronger. Hitler actually lost there. Hitler's plan to invade the Soviet Union was called Operation Barbarossa.
Winston Churchill was the leader of Great Britain. Hitler also attacked Churchill and Britain too. The code name for that plan was called Operation Sea Lion.
