The word Islam derives from the root word "salam," meaning peace, and signifies voluntary "self-surrender" to God. In the Quran, God tells us that He created us in order that we worship Him—through our faith, charity, and good deeds, as well as by seeking God's pleasure even in the mundane details of our daily life. Muslims believe God sent many prophets to teach mankind how to worship Him; starting with Adam, including Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and the last of the messengers, Muhammad (peace be upon them all). The Islamic position is that all of these prophets came with the same message: that there is no deity worthy of worship except the one true God (in Arabic, "Allah"). We believe that God, the Creator of the universe, is One—and that Muhammad (peace and blessings on him) is His final messenger and servant. Islam recognizes that humankind has free choice in whether to follow or not follow God's guidance, and that ultimately we will be accountable to God in the next life for the choices that we make in this life. Islam believes that each person is born pure, in harmony with God's design, and encourages the individual to focus on keeping both body and soul healthy through the remembrance, obedience, and worship of God. As Islam is a religion of the "middle way," there should be a correct balance between body and soul. One is encouraged to enjoy the many wholesome blessings of God—and to lead a healthy, active life with the qualities of kindness, modesty, honesty, mercy, courage, patience, and good manners. Islam is a natural way of life that encourages one to give due attention to one's relationship with God, and to treat all God's creation with kindness and compassion. The rights of the most vulnerable are firmly emphasized—whether parents in their old age, the rights of orphans, or of the poor. Islam teaches that it is ultimately through the doing of good deeds and seeking the pleasure of God that souls find true happiness and peace Useful sites about Islam: http://www.miraclesofthequran.com/ www.IslamReligion.com www.islam.com www.islamweb.net www.islamway.com www.islamonline.net www.islamworld.net
