About Me:

The Road Safety Foundation (formerly the Foundation for Road Safety Research) was founded in 1986 by the UK Automobile Association (then a member-owned motoring club).

The charity was established as a permanent legacy of the 1986 European Road Safety Year as Britain launched its first national casualty reduction target. The charity was initially called the AA Foundation for Road Safety Research in recognition of its major donor at the time. The Foundation was modelled on the successful charity, the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, founded in the USA by the American Automobile Association.

The objectives of the Road Safety Foundation are to carry out or procure research into all factors affecting the safe use of public roads.

The key programme of the Road Safety Foundation is the European Road Assessment Programme (EuroRAP), itself founded as a non-profit association by the Foundation.

In the past 10 years more than 30,000 people have died on Britain's roads. We all know someone killed or maimed in a brutal road crash. Road crashes bleed away 1.5% of GDP -- more than we spend on primary schools, twice what we spend on GPs.

Our roads need a safety overhaul. International research says Britain can do much more on safe road design, particularly on roads outside major towns where two-thirds of road deaths occur.

Serious crashes can drop by more than half when roads are given a safety makeover (safe crossings, crash barriers at the roadside, turning bays at junctions and good hazard markings).

To be world class we must be proactive and treat known high risks. We need safe drivers, safe vehicles and safe roads.

The 'self explaining' and 'forgiving' roads of top performing countries to make road deaths no more acceptable than rail or air crashes.
