Rehabilitation Through The Arts started in Sing Sing prison in 1996 to help fill the gap left by funding cuts in higher education in prisons. Today, RTA operates in 5 men's and women's prisons in New York State.

RTA offers workshops in theatre, dance, poetry, visual art, playwriting, improvisation, modern dance, scene study, Shakespeare study and vocal training.

RTA is a program of Prison Communities International Inc, a non-profit organization dedicated to criminal justice issues.

RTA's uses theater and other creative arts to offer prisoners a safe and supportive structure in which to build community and respect for self and for others, and to recognize a sense of achievement in the often brutalizing and harsh prison environment.

RTAs creative arts program improves literacy, communication, presentation and problem solving skills; increases self-confidence and self-discipline, respect for self and others; improves relationships with peers, family and prison staff, understanding of group collaboration, team building, peer tolerance and non-violent conflict resolution.

This program looks wonderful! The Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts recently had a similar program, Staging Old Masters, which you can see videos about on Youtube as well as on the site oldmasters.pulitzerarts.org.
