It does not refuel after takeoff because it leaks so much fuel. It refuels at 30,000 feet so that it can spend as much time as possible at higher altitude at mach 3.2. It leaks enough prior to takeoff to fill a few gas cans. An SR 71 pilot told me this.

@shogunMR Yes I do mean gorgeous, I just always find it funny when they say "She's a handsome woman" in old western movies.
