Why do they throttle down for a second time when they're about to enter orbital insertion? Surely the atmosphere is very thin so there'd be no stress on the ship? And why, on the edge of space, would they experience 3 gs?

Thanks. It must have taken an exceptionally skilled test pilot (which I think all the Apollo astronauts were) to manage things in the event of something going wrong, despite the fact that it was all automated.

Does anyone know what would have happened to the flight if Challenger had not gone full throttle when it was meant to? Would it have performed a sub-orbital hop (as they say) or would it have spelled trouble for the crew? Sensible answers, please.
