@internationalfreak12 They're not flaps, they're slats (flaps are at the trailing edge of the wing). Most modern jets have slats, as they increase the wing's lift.

@FPVsean Thanks for the comment, however the Il-62 wasn't a copy of the VC-10 as the Russians took the rear-engine concept from the Caravelle. Although the Il-62 and VC-10 look similar, they are quite different in design philosophy.
