because, the movie took place back in the 50's when whites hated blacks.. and he was accused of raping a white girl, and was sentenced to death.. but the black guy didnt seem harmful or angry. he was calm, and settle. He found a mouse and made it his friend. he liked the guards, and everyone around him. and when the time came for him to get executed the guards were sad, thats why they were crying. They didnt want to do it.. And it turned out it wasn't him who raped the girl. =(
