We started with 2 Rhodesian Ridgebacks, Chase and Rounder. Both were adopted through Ridgeback Rescue ( http://www.ridgebackrescue.org/ ) and are wonderful family members. Chase was born in a puppy mill and wound up in a pet shop. He shared a small cage with another big dog and had a lump on his rump from sitting in a cage 24/7. Someone purchased him just to get him out of those horrible conditions and donated him to rescue where he could get medical attention and a loving home. Chase will do anything for food. He is the one with the red nose (livernose). Rounder was purchased by a kind person from a backyard breeder. The pups were whelped and lived oustside (they were covered with fleas) in poor conditions. The breeder was breeding dogs strictly for profit without a thought towards producing healthy dogs. Another puppy from this breeder came into rescue missing an eye. The kind person bought him with the intent to place him in a good home, but was unsuccesful. She donated him to rescue so he could find his forever home. Rounder is incredibly enthusiastic about learning. Once he learns something, he's got it. There is a cute story how he got his name. My husband picked the name. He didn't want a second dog. He said if we did get one, we'd have to name it Rounder because his wife has him wrapped 'roundher finger. :-)

We lost Chase suddenly on May 8th, 2009. He was very intellgent and equally silly. During the first month we had him, he locked me out of the house and ate my dinner off the stove (chicken chili), would cry, whine and wet himself if I left him alone for a few minutes, knocked the dog barrier down in the car and sat in the driver's seat and got his paw stuck in his crate (we had to cut him out with wire cutters). That was just the first month. I thought I was going to train him. In the end, I learned more from him than he ever learned from me. He was a wonderful teacher with a great spirit. He made us laugh every day. He loved our training sessions with clicker games. We ended each session with the phrase - "All done, Chase. All done." Then, he knew he was off-duty. We send Chase over the rainbow bridge with heavy hearts and a final - All done, Chase. All done.

It's official. On 11/29/09, we signed the adoption paperwork for our newest family member, Pride. Pride was 4 1/2 months old when we first met him. He ended up in a shelter in Orlando with a littermate. He was terrified. He was very skittish during our first meeting. After about 20 minutes, he would sneak up and take a treat from my hand and run away. We agreed to take him for a week to see what he was like without his littermate and to give our rescue coordinator a break. Within hours of bringing him home, he was a different dog and we were picking out names. It is a joy to have a puppy in the house. He makes us smile every day.

I use clicker training (operant conditioning) in all my trick training (sometimes I use a verbal marker instead of a clicker). My dogs have a lot of energy and the mental stimulation helps drain their energy tanks. The tricks are also enrichment for them, as they LOVE our training sessions. An added bonus is that it has improved Rounder's self-confidence. Chase loved to show off his tricks and spent many hours doing therapy work at a local nursing home. He brightened the day for many with his tricks. Every dog can learn a trick. Give a trick a try. :-)
